Human Centered Design creates innovation at Price.

Innovation isn’t easy, which is why many great products never make it past the prototype phase. $14 billion of consumer products are returned to stores each year. 95% of those items are not returned due to defects, but poor design of the product itself.*

Price Engineering has employed Human Centered Design (HCD) principles since 2009 in order to enhance efficiency and increase the intuitive nature of oftentimes complex applications and machines developed through the company. Terry Glidden, Vice President of Price’s Mobile Division, perceives one the benefits of HCD to be that it “…enables the design team to zero in on what is truly important to the [customer].”

Tom Price, President of Price Engineering and Paul Decker formed a partnership to launch the Maverick Innovation Lab – a local company utilizing HCD principles in order to create growth and innovation in companies around the Greater Milwaukee area. Maverick hosted a seminar for Price employees, as well as a customer open house in February 2012. Attendees participated in several HCD exercises, in addition to a short lecture on the principles and benefits of HCD.

“My exposure to these HCD tools has changed my perspective on the methodology being used to design these systems […] because of HCD, I now believe that the most successful designs will be approached from the top-down, instead of using the traditional bottom-up approach.” – Jason Biwer, Business Development Engineer.
